IoT Data: The Shift From Data Center To Edge

By: Susana Schwartz

As written recently in The Economist, the world’s most lucrative asset is no longer oil, but data. Data is the currency of the 21st Century, and companies like Amazon, Google, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft and Tesla have replaced Big Oil as the most powerful companies in the world— the collective having control over much of the world’s data and over much of the revenue to be made in the “data economy.” “Ten years ago, the challenge was to collect the data, and Big Data became the means by which businesses could affordably collect the data they never had before…

The Hype and Hope of Cognitive Computing

By: Tim Young

Artificial Intelligence is in that charming gray area between science fiction and reality. There are the very real technologies under the AI umbrella that are gaining traction, of course. Still in the middle of its hype cycle, with some fatigue setting in, it won't be long before the long-term potential benefits can be observed and quantified. Watson, for example, is in the midst of a barrage of criticism for being overhyped and outgunned, despite being the most mature AI offering on the market. But in the big data arena alone, the potential that cognitive computing models represent is enormous and poised to grow at staggering rates…

Big Data Is Back In Fashion As Fuel for AI

By: Ilan Sade

When Gartner predicts that “by 2020, the average person will have more conversations with bots than with their spouse,” it becomes impossible to deny that, like the appearance of the first iPhone a decade ago, artificial intelligence (AI) is going transform our lives – but only more so. And like the iPhone, AI has the potential to usher in an entirely new era for service providers, acting as a powerful engine that drives them towards the goal of becoming truly digital service providers. It will transform the way they operate, the services they offer and, most importantly, their relationships with customers…

Mobile World Congress Americas

By: Susana Schwartz

In the MWC Americas pre-show article last month, Pipeline spoke to GSMA about its goals in partnering with CTIA to deliver a quality event in the Americas. The event ran from September 12-14 in San Francisco, and there were positives and negatives for this inaugural show. In the pre-event interview, the GSMA reported to Pipeline it was "on track" to reach their anticipated 30,000 in attendance; yet the actual show attendance was nearly 30 percent less than expected according to the official GSMA numbers…

Turning Siloed Data Lakes into Actionable, Real-Time Network Analytics

By: Naim Falandino

Cloud-based OTT applications and the Internet of Things (IoT) are putting demands on the network that are fundamentally changing not only the way it is architected, but also the way it is analyzed. Just as network silos and overlays are converging into a seamless dynamic mesh, operators need to join the isolated data lakes that currently exist — using big data to create a holistic view of the network. However, operators need to embrace that network analytics can no longer be reactive; they must be proactive and generate actionable insights that can accommodate and drive the dynamic nature of the new network…

Looking ahead to SCTE-ISBE Cable-Tec Expo 2017

By: Paula B. Zimmerman

It feels like the community that lives and breathes Integrated Communications and Entertainment (ICE) Technology wants to embrace a communications conference. Collectively, we desire industry-organized events that provide an annual venue for networking, technical education, showcasing innovation and industry leadership from the top. Is SCTE•ISBE Cable-Tec Expo that event? This fall, our eyes are on The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) and its global brand, the International Society of Broadband Experts (ISBE), as they collaborate with partners from within and beyond the cable industry for a week-long series of events to inspire the critical thinking that will support and energize the industry throughout the rapid changes and exciting evolution we are all experiencing…

The Criticality of SDN Analytics Data

By: Cengiz Alaettinoglu

SDN technologies promise dynamic, flexible networks that can be reconfigured quickly to accommodate different business requirements. However, automation alone will not achieve this. Current SDN infrastructures lack the management intelligence to run autonomous networks effectively. SDN presents many management challenges, including loss of visibility into and control of changes occurring in the network, and the need to capture engineering know-how in SDN applications. SDN analytics are what is required for real-time orchestration and enhanced service visibility across both legacy and SDN network infrastructures…

Managing Big Data in an Era of Digital Transformation

By: John English

Data is big business. As the saying goes, information is power, and this has never been truer than with traditionally hardware-focused companies shifting toward a software-based model. This digital transformation is happening across the board and is causing enterprises around the world to scramble in efforts to better grasp what’s happening on their networks and operations in order to transform their own businesses. As a result of this ongoing transition, the last few years have seen the likes of IBM and Oracle hoovering up application and cloud technology providers, driven by a need to offer end-to-end services for their customers…

Tapping into AI to Ignite Selling of Complex IT Solutions

By: Ittai Bareket, CEO of Netformx

Driving business outcomes is the goal of every CEO. Using technology to automate introduces new challenges, new opportunities, and many potential benefits. Even in the world of networking, where hard-wired systems are being transformed to be virtual, creating lakes of big data is the new norm. All that data is useless unless it delivers business value. Combined with Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), sophisticated data correlation techniques and Artificial Intelligence (AI) promise a new generation of capabilities that will bring dramatic business-oriented benefits…

The Value of Big-Network Data for Advertisers

By: Cam Cullen

Advertisers need help. Between social media and the web at large, the average consumer is being hit with more promotional messages than ever before. And that is before you even consider TV, direct mail, or the many other platforms through which businesses push their products. It is no surprise we are all suffering from ad fatigue as a result. There is a lot of data to show how adverts are blurring into the background for most people, which is leaving attempts to reach consumers with new offers or promotions going largely unnoticed…

Letter to the Editor

By: Tim Young

“Knowledge is of no value unless you put it into practice.” -Anton Chekhov* *this may or may not have been Chekhov. I don’t read or speak Russian. I’ve read “The Seagull,” “The Cherry Orchard,” “Uncle Vanya” and a few other of his more well-known works, but my knowledge is necessarily limited. So for a quote like this one—one with no clearly cited literary origin—I’m at the mercy of the internet and its notoriously dubious ability to crowdsource the origin of any supposed quote…
